2 Probability Distribution of the Hubble Constant
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a method to compute the probability distribution function of the (true) Hubble constant and the age of the universe, given the estimate of the Hubble constant in our nearby galaxy samples. Our method takes into account both the observational errors and the cosmic variance, and enables to quantitatively compute the constraints on the cosmological models. Based on the present local observation H 0 = 80 17 km/s/Mpc, the probability of H 0 < 50 km/s/Mpc is about 6% for the Einstein { de Sitter universe ( 0 = 1) and 4% for an open ( 0 = 0:2) universe. These probabilities are reduced to 0.8% and 0.03%, respectively, if the accuracy of the observational uncertainty is improved within 10%. Similar probabilistic constraints on t 0 are also discussed. Non-Gaussian Error Distribution of Hubble Constant Measurements
We construct the error distribution of Hubble constant (H0) measurements from Huchra’s compilation of 461 measurements of H0 and the WMAP experiment central value H0 = 71 km s −1 Mpc−1. This error distribution is non-Gaussian, with significantly larger probability in the tails of the distribution than predicted by a Gaussian distribution. The 95.4 % confidence limits are 7.0 σ in terms of the q...
متن کاملGravitational Lens Time Delays: a Statistical Assessment of Lens Model Dependences and Implications for the Global Hubble Constant
Time delays between lensed multiple images have been known to provide an interesting probe of the Hubble constant, but such application is often limited by degeneracies with the shape of lens potentials. We propose a new statistical approach to examine the dependence of time delays on the complexity of lens potentials, such as higher-order perturbations, non-isothermality, and substructures. Sp...
متن کاملHubble-bubble in Iranian Folklore
Hubble-bubble has been the most common device for smoking tobacco in Iran and its neighboring. It has a folkloric name in every region. Hubble-bubble consists of a glass pitcher or pottery at the bottom, a wooden body in the middle, a wooden or plastic tube attached to the body for puffing, and a censer at the top to put tobacco and charcoal. Puffing causes the charcoal to catch fire and the to...
متن کاملCosmology with Galaxy Clusters II. Projection Effects on Hubble Constant and Gas Mass Fraction
It is well known that a combined analysis of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect and the X-ray emission observations can be used to determine the angular diameter distance to galaxy clusters, from which the Hubble constant is derived. The present values of the Hubble constant derived through the SZ/X-ray route have a broad distribution ranging from 30 to 70 km s−1 Mpc−1. We show that this broad ...
متن کامل2 00 2 Gravitational Lenses , the Distance Ladder and the Hubble Constant : A New Dark Matter Problem
In cold dark matter models, a galaxy's dark matter halo is more spatially extended than its stars. However, even though the five well-constrained gravitational lenses with time delay measurements must have similar dark matter distributions, reconciling the Hubble constant estimated from their time delays with local estimates is possible only if that dark matter distribution is as compact as the...
